Saskia Reimagined (Series of 6)

“Saskia Reimagined” by Dr Ahmed Elgammal is a series of six works that celebrates Saskia van Uylenburgh, the love and wife of Rembrandt van Rijn, the inspiring Baroque artist.

Rembrandt depicted his wife in many artworks throughout her life with him and even after her tragic death. Rembrandt’s portraits of Saskia tell us untold stories of his love and affliction to her. As Van Gogh once described her portrait “Rembrandt says things for which there are no words in any language.”

Saskia’s married life was quite tragic. After three of her babies died, Saskia herself died at age of 29, shortly after giving birth to Titus, Rembrant and Saskia only surviving child. It must have been devastating to Rembrandnt who continued to make portraits of Saskia after her death, looking young, flourishing, and glowing, decorated with pearls, red velvet and gold.

The Saskia series continues in the direction of the late portraits of Saskia after her death, and re-imagines Saskia’s earlier portraits in ways contrasting the way Rembrandt depicted her originally. The series instead depicts Saskia in a lavish decorative setting.

While the short tragic life of Saskia is very foreign to our life today, it was a very typical life of women living in the sixteen century, seeing several of their babies and children dying, and dying themselves at a young age while giving birth. In this series, artificial intelligence is used to generate pearls and sapphires morphed with Saskia’s portraits. Pearls are chosen as a symbol of woman and love, and sapphire to symbolise royalty and devine. That choice is meant to celebrate the life of Saskia and honor all women who lived and suffered as she did, elevating them to a devine royal status.

The music track in the video is adapted from Bach Well Tempered Clavier, the most extensive and influential undertaking for solo keyboards of the Baroque era.

Computer scientist and artist based in New Jersey, USA, a pioneer at the intersection of Art and Artificial Intelligence.

Prof. Elgammal is a professor of computer science at Rutgers University. He is an Executive Council Faculty at Rutgers University Center for Cognitive Science (RUCCS). He is the founder and director of the Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which focuses on data science in the domain of digital humanities. He is also the founder of Playform, a platform that focus on making AI accessible to artists

Prof. Elgammal developed a variant of GAN called CAN (“creative adversarial networks”) based on a theory of how new artistic styles evolve. AICAN (AI Creative Adversarial Network) was designed as an autonomous AI artist and collaborative creative partner. AICAN is the first machine generated artist to pass the Turing Test.

AICAN has partnered with SuperRare to bring its Faceless Portrait Transcending Times series, Permutation series and Birth of Venus to NFT.

Prof. Elgammal has published over 180 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and books in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. His research on knowledge discovery in art history and AI art generation, received wide international media attention, including reports on the Washington Post, New York Times, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, CNN, CBS, NBC News, Science News, New Scientist, and many others.

Prof. Elgammal AICAN art has exhibited at Scope Miami Art Fair in 2018 and Scope New York in 2019. In 2019, “Faceless Portraits Transcending Times” exhibition was the first AI Art gallery exhibition in a major New York City Gallery that was held at the HG Contemporary Gallery in Chelsea NYC. Later, that series was exhibited in the National Museum of China, in Beijing. In 2018, “the Birth of Venue” was featured on HBO’s Silicon Valley, Season 5, Episode 3, in the fictional context of being “the first work of art made by AI to be sold by Sotheby’s”. In 2017, an Artsy editorial acclaimed his Permutation series as “the biggest artistic achievement of the year”. In 2016, a TV segment about his research, produced for PBS, has won an Emmy award. His art has been shown in several technology and art venues in Los Angeles, Frankfurt, San Francisco, and New York City.

Prof. Elgammal received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2006. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer science and automatic control from University of Alexandria, Egypt, in 1993 and 1996, respectively. He received another M.Sc. and his Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2000 and 2002, respectively.
