“Untitled (Night Roses)” by Sara Ludy expands its materiality through time and space in their infinite mutability as a temporal object.
Processed through multiple 2D and 3D programs, each iteration is embedded with new gestures, layers, and dimensions. The process of folding that relates to Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the fold is thus depicted as the work acquires a patina of artifacts that reveal the natural tendencies and limitations of its digital materiality. These artifacts build a multidimensional composition that reflects its own temporality and elusiveness, in the notion of Digital Baroque.
Revealing as much as concealing, splicing open our fixed realities and layering colors and worlds as if they were opalescent sediments, the work portrays this contemporary “baroqueness” that appears again as the principle of a digital presence. Whether in science, philosophy, mathematics, poetry, or art, the Fold—like the baroque itself— resists linear narrative and causality, showing instead decenteredness, instability, and a tension between being and becoming, between concealing and revealing, and between dissolution and unity.
A spectral and sublime work that weaves into natural and simulated forms when the digital and physical coalesce, creating a networked, non-hierarchical space, and body of work that points to the interconnectedness of everything.
Sara Ludy
American multimedia artist and composer based in Northern New Mexico whose practice investigates the confluence of the physical and virtual. Ludy’s works include a range of media, such as virtual reality, animation, sound, digital painting, photography, and sculpture.
Ludy is one of the leading new media artists of her generation with an increasing presence in the NFT space. Her alluring, sensory art forms transcend space and time in their dreamlike virtuality. These cyber constructed nebulas recognise the infinite nature of our world, exploring the simultaneous existence of knowledge and energy. Their aesthetic and art historical lineage complement many of the important themes and contexts around ideas of the metaverse, constructed realities and the online discourses of the NFT space. Recent NFT exhibitions of her work include Sotheby’s ‘Natively Digital’, Transfer Gallery’s ‘Pieces of Me’, Open Earth’s Foundation’s ‘The Carbon Drop’ and Honor Fraser Gallery ‘Digital Combines’.
