Digital Reminiscences, 2022
Digital Reminiscences by Vittorio Bonapace invites us into a digital world where 17th century classicism and Baroque collides with Robotics.
Immersed in a magnificent classical environment reminiscent of Giovanni Paolo Panini’s galleries, surrounded by a collection of paintings and sculpture, androids assemble around an easel. A live drawing session is performed between the overall curiosity of the students, enjoying what seems to be a creative and inspired moment.
Inspiring the class is the renowned Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix, a beautiful classical female masterpiece reclining on a couch by Italian sculptor, Antonio Canova. A drone hovers above, registering the progress of the painting. It projects and connects the outcome to the gallery’s canvas, erasing the whole artistic heritage, influenced by Canaletto, one of the most iconic painters of the Baroque era. One spots everywhere the same image, attempting to express the “repetition” and the “copy” theme in contemporary society. The main artwork is impossible to be seen directly but a projected image is revealed at the end, glitching and flashing until all the canvases turn off in a sort of over calculated data crash. An orchestra tuning to concert pitch transforms into upbeat techno music, transforming the overall atmosphere to an unexpected moment of contemporary vibe.
The seriousness of the heritage iconography combined with caravaggesque style sets the tone, while an art-machine narrative is humorously portrayed.
